Agricultural Crop Pesticide Use
- Studies & Reports
AIS has been the sole supplier of detailed agricultural and commercial horticultural
pesticide use data for the following countries: Japan, Netherlands,
S. Africa
Quantitative data is collected and presented within each country on
pesticides used against each weed, insect or disease in each important
crop. This is illustrated in the table below (Japan/fungicides/potatoes).
The data may be analyzed by AGROWIN NT, the standard software used by
most agrochemical companies. It allows searching by year, by country,
by crop, by target pest, and by product (brand or active).
As well as the data on diskette, a hardcopy report is written for each
country.
Report Content
National crop pesticide use studies in Japan, Netherlands and South
Africa, conducted since 1988.
1. These three studies represent a twofold value for the global marketer.
Not only do they provide comprehensive share and tonnage data on three
country markets, but they also may be used as predictors for major product
trends in those regions of the world where the three countries are located:-
- Rice pesticide developments and registrations throughout the rice growing
areas of Asia are typically foreshadowed by the introduction of those
same products in Japan, the region's key pesticide market.
- Similarly, South Africa tends to be the bellwether for pesticide development
and introduction in other African markets because of the size and technological
level of its agriculture
-
The Netherlands leads the rest of Europe in regulations encouraging
a shift to lower-dosage pesticides. Hence, the success or failure of
products introduced in that country tends to be mirrored subsequently
in other European markets.
- The written reports give special emphasis to this predictive aspect.
2. These studies provide detailed coverage of pesticide use in all agricultural
crops in all three countries. In addition, the Netherlands study will
also cover cut flower and bulb production. Data provided for each pesticide
brand within each crop include:-
- Target weed/insect/disease
- Area treated
- Tractor and product areas treated
- Dose rate
- Number of applications
- Price of brand
- Cost of treatment per hectare/acre
- Volume and value of brand
- Active ingredients
- Concentration and formulation of each brand
- Identification of distributor
- Market shares.
3. Data Access System. As well as the hardcopy report, a diskette is provided
at no extra charge with all quantified data ready for loading into the
AGROWIN NT system.
4. Recent enhancements include:-
- Formulator for every brand in each country
- Earlier completion of Japanese study.
5. Purchase options tailored to requirements of individual client
- By country, or all countries together
- All pesticides, or one indication (herbicides or insecticides or fungicides)
6. Discounts available up to 25% for purchase of more than one study.
Competitive Considerations
These studies offer features not found elsewhere:-
The only available sequence of pesticide use studies providing detailed
coverage of all agricultural crops in all three countries, and of cut
flowers and bulbs in the Netherlands. Other studies in the Netherlands
are limited to only a few of the major crops, and omit flowers and bulbs
entirely.
Consistent methodology and continuous coverage of these markets has
been offered by AIS since 1988. Trend analysis available.
Quantitative measurements of pesticide use are provided in AGROWIN
NT-compatible form in the Data Access System - at no extra charge.
Estimates closely correspond to actual sales, evidenced through continuous
feedback to the sources of information.
Clients have access to all sources of information in all countries.

The markets are large, complex and changing
Japan
Understanding the dynamics of the Japanese market provides useful intelligence
for other rice markets in the region. At US$4.1 billion, Japan has the
second largest crop pesticide market in the world after the USA. 60%
of the market is accounted for by rice, and success in the Japanese
market can be essential to the positioning of products in the entire
Asian rice market due to similarities in pests, soils and climate.
Thorough knowledge of the Japanese market gives insights into the global
ambitions of Japanese companies. Outside the USA and Europe, the greatest
number of pesticide basic manufacturers is in Japan. As the Japanese
market matures, Japanese companies such as Sumitomo and Ishihara-Sangyo
have already invested heavily to establish a major part of their business
outside Japan.
For pricing and performance, what is achieved in Japan indicates likely
positioning of these products in other countries. Many products are
first introduced into Japan before other countries, especially for rice
and vegetables.
Netherlands
The market in the Netherlands is a significant pointer to developments
that will be mirrored in other countries in Europe. The crop pesticide
use market in the Netherlands is worth US$200 million at end user level,
and the flower and bulb market is worth another US$100 on top of that
- and growing.
The Dutch Government has been following a policy of reducing the volume
of active ingredients applied. Tonnages have come down substantially
but the market's value in local currency has increased by 15% since
1990 and by 40% in dollar terms. Higher dose rate pesticides have been
replaced by products of acceptable efficacy and lower dose rates.
South Africa
The complex South African market of 38 crops has its own growth potential,
but is also of importance by being at the center of developments in
southern Africa. Since 1990 the market has grown in value by 50% in
local currency and by 20% in dollar terms to about US$300 million. On
top of that there is expertise and capital available to invest in developing
the agricultural industries of nearby countries like Mozambique, and
this in turn is encouraging pesticide companies to expand their business
in the whole of southern Africa.
Uses Of Data
Known uses of the data by clients purchasing it since 1988 include:-
- "The Analogue Case" - as an advance planning input for introduction
of products in other countries
-
Measurement of company performance for corrective and reward actions
through quantifying market size, and developments in relation to target
pests
-
As an independent source of information on volumes, prices and market
shares for negotiations with national subsidiaries, distributors and
licensees
-
Development of pricing and promotion strategies through quantification
of brand usage
-
- Assessment of strategic presence through market share analysis in comparison
to competitors
- Identifying product registration opportunities by evaluating market
share of existing products (especially those losing patent protection)
in the light of their targets, and the value they represent
-
Evaluating expectations for products in the development pipeline, helping
to avoid those that are inconsistent with market needs.
